Why you should change liners more often than you think

14 July 2026·4 min read
Liners age faster than most dairy farmers expect. After 2,500 milkings a liner loses elasticity — with a direct effect on teat health and cell count.

In dairy farming, small details determine big results. Liners are a good example: they seem to last long, but lose elasticity after around 2,500 milkings.

The core of the problem

Many farmers work to a fixed schedule that is not aligned with actual use. The result: underperforming systems, higher cell counts and unnecessary costs.

Practical recommendations

  • Check the change interval — keep 2,500 milkings as a maximum.
  • Have pulsators measured at least yearly by a certified technician.
  • Record cell-count trends per cow — early detection prevents treatment costs.
  • Combine teat cleaning with timely teat dipping.
